Synchronicity: More Than Coincidence

Words: Dr Rajgopal NIDAMBOOR

Many of us go through a unique experience with certain individuals who come into our life, not just by happenstance, but also for a celestial reason. All of us make friends and build relationships. However, there will be just a few that become extremely special. You would have met them by a quirk. They are friends for life — because, you get the feeling that you know them, not for a few years, but ever since you were a kid.

The warmth in such friendships is mutual. It is also extraordinary — there are no expectations, yet there’s a divine role fulfilled. They become your motivating instruments and vice versa. Their ‘connect’ is genuine — although this emerges through a certain set of circumstances, something unique, or divinely orchestrated in seemingly correlated events in life. There are also times when we meet someone as merely a face in the crowd. It just happens — this person arrives at the right time, when you are in the pits, to resolve issues. This sequence of events is aptly termed as synchronicity in Jungian philosophy.

Synchronicity is not an occurrence, place, or a thing. It is also not just the individual, who has arrived like a messiah in your life. Synchronicity is a meadow of divine energy. It has something to it that more than meets the mind. It holds a palpable strength, while guiding us to a particular set of situations for changes that you wish should occur, or assisting us to move ahead and come of age. This is not something that you have been yearning for long — a whole, new window of transformation. You don’t find synchronicity; rather, it is the other way round. It will find you. It will hold your hand, when the chips are down. It will make you walk in times good and dismal. It will make you sprint to reach your goals and fulfil your dreams.

Situations sometimes have nothing to do with circumstances, though they are a part of the whole and sum of the parts. To pick an example. You have problems with your career. You want to move out of your present job and get a better position in another organisation. Lo, and behold, you spot a newspaper advertisement related to such an opening. This is somewhat synchronistic. Well, when it works to our advantage, we all love to call it a meaningful, synchronous coincidence come true. What if it doesn’t, and the position goes to someone else? This is not as simple as separating the chaff from the grain. Synchronicity occurs when you are not actually looking for it. It surfaces just like that — out of the blue. It appears without your knowing, or ‘gut’ feeling. It is often the consequence of a result and vice versa — a magical voyage of self-discovery, or rediscovering oneself anew.

Synchronicity is all-encompassing in our universe. The serenity of the lake, the turquoise sky, and the composite complexities of our mind, body and soul. There is synchronicity in the exquisiteness of creation itself. It pervades and directs everyone’s life and career. It is this amazing component that makes us believe that there is a driving force on our planet enormously greater than you and I. It is this divine attribute that helps us to sail through countless vicissitudes, or ups and downs, in life.

Agreed that life is not just a spectacle; it is also not merely a predicament. What makes life worth living is a willingness to accept the possibility that good things will ensue at the right time. When this happens, remember your especial friend — your pillar of strength.
