‘Optimal Wellness: Need Of The Hour’

Dr SWETHA S responds to ThinkWellness360 questionnaire.

Why and how did you think of becoming a doctor?

It was my childhood dream, to be precise — yet, the fact is, I always had the conviction, also passion, to helping others and making a positive impact on peoples’ lives. I was also inspired, no less, by the medical profession’s ability to heal and comfort patients — in the best manner possible.

What made you think of, study and specialise in the system of medicine you now practice?

Ayurveda is a unique science — it exemplifies life. Its personalised, customized, or bespoke, approach in the treatment of every individual, who’s as unique as their fingerprint, or signature, in health and illness, is what propelled me towards this system. Besides, I was as much influenced by Indian philosophy, just as much as Ayurveda, thanks to has its strong roots in Indian philosophy. This was it. I decided to study and specialise in the system of medicine — the completest of medical sciences.

What has been your personal and professional experience as a doctor?

Being a doctor enables me to leveraging myself personally, as also professionally. It’s, indeed, been an incredible journey filled with continuous learning, growth and adaptation. This connects me to making a positive impact on someone’s life too — whether it is through providing medical care, offering support in challenging times, or witnessing the patient’s journey towards recovery.

What unique and special skills you think you have that has made the big difference for your patients?

I can connect with people quickly. I can certainly say that I’m patient enough to understanding the concerns of every patient and giving my one hundred per cent in treating any case.

What is your best definition of optimal wellness and why?

For me, optimal wellness is overall wellness and harmony of the individual in all the aspects of health, including physical, mental, emotional and social well-being. Prioritising optimal wellness of every individual is the need of the hour — this promotes our positive attributes like vitality, resilience, fulfillment and purpose.

A fifty-year-old patient with chronic acidity, and psoriasis, who was on antacids every day. I was able to make him to withdraw his daily dose of antacids with basic Ayurveda medicines, proper diet and lifestyle changes. What’s more, his psoriasis too improved significantly.

Your ‘not-so-good’ case?

A case of uncontrolled diabetes. I prescribed him several medicines, from time to time, but nothing really worked. He ended up taking insulin. I feel awkward for not being able to treat his case properly — notwithstanding my best efforts.
