Propel Thyself

Words: Dr Rajgopal NIDAMBOOR

All of us have within us an impelling attribute — one that keeps us going. It is called attitude. It is this one big thing that drives us to be what we want to be, no matter what. When you compound attitude with yet another propelling quality, the divine power principle, you will emerge tall. You will be able to achieve and excel in every area of life and career.

Philosophers contend that it is not just attitude, or the divine power principle, that manifests in our dreams and turns them into realities. There is something more than the ‘duo’ that transforms us from wannabes to achievers. It does not relate to the mind, or intellect. It connects to reason — the reason of the spheres. It makes, or breaks, your advance or progress, at every station of your life and career — it makes the less gifted among us reach better levels. It, likewise, makes the more gifted among us to be great — the difference being of degree, if not talent. Put simply, this means that you cannot be an achiever, or super-achiever, or great, if you do not ‘hark back’ on the principle of your reasoning powers and employ them with full effect — at every step of the way. This is because reason understands both principle and morality better than pure intellect.

The point also is — reason is an extension of the self. It is, in fact, beyond the self. Here is why — intellect alone will serve the selfish for their selfish ends. When you mix intellect with reason, the two elements elevate the unselfish to the next level — to be not only selfless, but also compassionate. This amplifies, no less, our ability to savour and celebrate others’ success, or achievements — not be envious of their triumphs.

There is also a paradox — the more you use intellect and reason without any regard to principles, you may become known as a capable individual, but the truth is you will never achieve the tag of personified greatness. This applies to people around us who spend too much time to ‘prepare’ their intellect and reasoning clout, at every ‘mind-power’ workshop, while giving too little time and no preparation in deference to one’s inner call, or the soul. When this happens, there is a ‘disconnect’ with the power principle. The outcome is anybody’s guess.

Each of us is endowed by the divine to be good, or great, in our own way — this may differ in its presentation, from one person to the other. For some, greatness is achieving something outstanding in the creative arts and not just rewards, or financial success, alone. For others, it may be something extraordinary — something that gives them the ‘ticket’ to enormous wealth and comfort — a life of luxury — replete with the finest of homes, the swankiest of cars and a private resort on a far-away island. Yet, for all we know, all of this may not customarily provide peace, harmony, balance and happiness. This is because to have the power over self, not just luxuries, it is essential to conform one’s life to the pure idea of living well — a life which feels great from deep within.

It is not that to lead a good, happy and peaceful life, one should forsake all conventionalities, or accepted standards of right and wrong. Far from it. You can be good and great, in your own mode, if only you can prevail over your own ego and elevate your inner soul — from the narrowest of confines of the mind to one that takes you to a higher level of consciousness, or conscious awareness.
