‘I Love Being Myself. Always’

Keerthy SURESH on beauty, health, fitness and wellness.

Your view on beauty?

I believe that glamour is too often equated with beauty, but the fact is we have ‘elevated’ glamour into a mistaken idea. I am happy with my looks. However, focusing on roles is important and shooting for multiple movies at a time makes me feel relaxed as I shift between characters, instead of sticking into one. For me, beauty is something you emote — of what you are, not what you are not. Confidence is also a part of your beauty package. Be yourself. Be ‘you’ always. Beauty ‘becomes’ you.

Your ‘take’ on fitness?

I’ve a wide-ranging workout regimen. I work a good deal to maintaining my body contour as well as a well-toned body. My routine is 30 minutes of cardio spinning and muscular exercises, 20 minutes of everyday jogging, and 10 minutes of cycling. This keeps me fit and trim. Each of us should focus on our fitness, while knowing what we can do, or not do. Fitness is the first step to optimal health and wellness.

Your view of health and wellness?

They go hand-in-hand. I swear by my yoga sessions. Yoga improves my concentration, balance and posture; it can also reduce the level of stress hormones. My view is simple: “Take for example, shirsasana [headstand]. That’s the beauty of seeing the world upside down with complete peace of mind. Yoga asanas not only ‘up’ your body fitness, they bend your mind and mend your body. Yoga is one great way of keeping yourself fit and staying on top with regard to your health and wellness.

Your ’take’ on work-life balance?

For a professional movie actress, I ought to maintain a fine balance — be it work, or life. There is work outside of life and there is life outside of work. I’m extremely close to my family, particularly my mother, who has been a major influence in my life and career. More than anything else, I’m grounded — the more grounded you are, the better it is for oneself and others with whom you work. I agree that bringing balance at work and in life isn’t always easy. You ought to make it work, somehow, and things will slowly fall into place and work well for you.

Your mantra to beat stress?

The art of balance as yoga teaches helps me in calming my mind. I practice several yoga asanas, like the vrikshasana [tree pose], utthita hasta padangusthasana [extended hand-to-big-toe pose], natarajasana [dancer’s pose], and virabhadrasana [warrior pose], among others. Practicing progressive balance is something that is not only calming, and relaxing, it is also a fine-tuned ‘roadmap,’ or mode, to keeping stress at bay. Add to this mindful meditation, and you’ve nature’s best ‘chill pill’ to beating stress.
