Homeopathy: Pioneering Facts

Words: Dr Narayan C DESHPANDE

Q: My homeopathic doctor often tells me that homeopathy pioneered a host of ideas that are in vogue today and also celebrated for their wisdom. Could you please elaborate — with a few examples?

— JK, New Delhi

A: Homeopathy pioneered the research and treatment of allergies — to highlight a top example. Picture this — severe allergic reaction to bee stings is treated safely and effectively with Apis mellifica, a homeopathic medicine, made from honeybee.

It was actually the British homeopath, Dr C H Blackely, MD, who suggested, in 1871, that seasonal sneezing and nasal surges were triggered by exposure to pollen dust, two decades before conventional [allopathic] medicine developed allergen injections.

Likewise, a common cold treated with homeopathy can boost your immune defences to a totally new level. In so doing, you’ll be able to overcome viral incursions of daily life on your own. There is nothing better than giving your immune defences the ‘push’ to fight on their own, because our immune system is far too smart — a quick learner too.

The overall goal of homeopathic treatment is aimed to increase the level of your health to a new level. It enables us to be not so dependent on medicines alone, at the drop of a sniffle, since your immune defences would, on their own, respond to an obvious, or latent, threat quickly and effectively.

Modus Operandi

Research evidences that basophil, a type of white blood cell [WBC], releases histamine when it is activated by something like a bee sting. Since it becomes electromagnetically unstable once it is activated, a sting can provoke a histamine ‘attack,’ and all of the accompanying allergy-like symptoms. Homeopathic dilutions of Apis mellifica [honeybee] are thought to stop basophils from releasing histamine. The idea is that the electrical pulses stabilise the cell, ‘muting’ its electromagnetic fluctuations, so it doesn’t ‘let go’ of its histamine in the first place. This is why a bee sting and other bites, or reactions, heal quickly with Apis mellifica.

Homeopathy & Influenza

In 1998 the French Society of Homeopathy conducted a survey of 23 homeopathic doctors relating to their use of Influenzinum, a homeopathic remedy, as a flu preventative. The survey included use of Influenzinum over a ten-year period [1987-1998] in 458 patients. The results of the survey were impressive. In approximately 90 per cent of the cases, no instances of the flu occurred when Influenzinum was used as a preventative.

Immunology & Homeopathy

Immunology is the study of the structure and function of the immune system, the complex and integrated group of organs, tissues, cells and cell products, such as antibodies that, by differentiating the self from non-self, defend the body against infection, or disease, and neutralise potentially pathogenic substances. This branch of biomedicine initially found resistance from more traditional medical disciplines, such as pathology and physiology; recent decades have witnessed its extraordinary development.

Western immunology and homeopathy began at the end of the eighteenth century: the first of Dr Edward Jenner’s smallpox vaccinations were given at the same time when Dr Samuel Hahnemann, MD, the founder of homeopathy, was conducting his first homeopathic ‘medicinal provings.’

The first organic proposal of the fundamentals of homeopathy was made by Dr Hahnemann in 1796: “One imitates nature, which sometimes cures chronic diseases by adding another disease, and then uses in the [preferably chronic] disease a drug that is capable of exciting another artificial disease as similar as possible to the natural disease to be cured.”

Dr Hahnemann was the first physician too to prepare Hydrophobinum, a homeopathic medicine, made from the saliva of a rabid dog to treat hydrophobia — a condition, caused by the bite of a mad dog, which presents itself with a ‘pathological fear’ for water. This occurred at a time when Louis Pasteur, the founder of vaccination, was but just eight years old.

Holistic Advance

When there is a lack of sync in the body, the result is illness. Homeopathy makes you healthy by addressing your unique symptom characteristics, including mind, body and emotions. The natural holistic healing power of homeopathy boosts the immune system in not just combating illness, but also preventing their recurrence.

Homeopathic remedies stimulate the immune system to assist the body in repairing any imbalances that may have occurred, naturally. Homeopathy also aims at establishing the body’s own natural balance through which our innate natural immune mechanism can maintain balance and thrive.

Maintenance Of Health & Well-Being

Homeopathy enhances our immune state by stimulating our immune defences. In other words, it enhances our immunity — this helps to prevent illness and keep you healthier with long-term, tangible benefits.

Total Safety

Homeopathic remedies are easy and convenient to take; they are also safe and free of side-effects. They are non-habit forming. For people with low immunity, a well-chosen homeopathic remedy not only strengthens immunity naturally, it can also help one to resist illnesses, naturally.

Homeopathy For Mother & Child

It is a well-known fact that the best groundwork for healthy pregnancy and childbirth is laid before conception — with homeopathic remedies. Homeopathy prepares the body for a healthy start — for the mother and the baby. It boosts their immunity too. Naturally.
