Health & WiFi

Words: Dr Deborah OLENEV

The less one knows about this subject, the happier one generally is. The question arises: is ignorance bliss when it comes to WiFi radiation or EMFs [electromagnetic fields]? Whether WiFi radiation is, or is not, a health threat is as controversial a question as does global warming really exist. There is ample scientific evidence to support both the validity of global warming and the health risks of WiFi radiation, yet there are plenty of people who deny the existence of their threat to life on our planet

I attended a conference, a few years ago, at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts, entitled “Wireless Technology and Public Heath: Health and Environmental Hazards in a Wireless World.” Scientists, doctors, researchers, and people in the utilities industry all gave evidence in support of the fact that radiation is a health risk. They explained the mechanism of how this risk pans out in the body, and talked about steps people can take to try to address this risk. I also learned about the corruption in the California Public Utilities Commission, which is supposed to regulate the state’s privately owned electric utilities. The regulatory commissions are infiltrated by the very people whom they were created to regulate. Hence, there is no authentic regulation protecting the interest of the public.

Cause For Alarm

I read a book called, A Wellness Guide to the Digital Age, by Kerry Crofton. This book was definitely not pleasure reading. The first part of the book was a cry of alarm, and very disturbing. In the second half the author talked about some of the things we can do to safeguard our homes and families.
Here are some of the risk factors I learned about and suggestions as to what you can do to protect yourself and your loved ones.

According to Loretta Lynch, one of California’s most influential lawyers and a former president of the California Public Utilities Commission, the Smart Meter replaced the earlier analogue meter, which had been fully paid for, and was no longer a source of income for the utility industry, so they convinced people to install Smart Meters in their homes. The analogue meters did not give off any radiation, and provided entry level jobs for people. It was perfect technology. With the Smart Meter the industry could charge their customers the price of the meter, and save money by cutting down their workforce. The Smart Meter could also gather information about the residents of the houses that they were attached to. They tell the utilities companies when you use electricity the most, when you run your dishwasher, and so forth, the utility companies become very smart about you, and they get extremely wealthy off of you as well.

Here is a quote from Crofton’s book, page 69:

“Are you suspicious yet of technologies labelled ‘smart?’ The health concerns are not just about one Smart Meter, but hubs of them in high-density dwellings, the prospect of billions of them around the world, and their powerful wireless Smart Grid/Wi-MAX networks. Smart Meters send out frequent bursts of data [energy consumption readings] from your house to your neighbour’s, and then to the power company. Electro-sensitive people, and others, could suffer from this involuntary exposure. The emission levels “meet government standards and are too low to cause harm” officials declare.

Let’s ask some hard questions. Where is the evidence that this radiation, re-classified in 2011 by the WHO as “possibly carcinogenic,” will not be harmful? What agency is monitoring our accumulated dose of exposure? Why are you forging ahead, when some utilities are removing Smart Meters?”

Minimise The Risk Of The Smart Meter

You can do your own research about the Smart Meter, but, in the meantime, please know that you have the option to get off the Smart Meter and back on the earlier and safer analogue meter. PG&E charges an installation fee of US$75 and a monthly fee of US$10 to pay for sending an employee in to read your meter. This is money very well spent to safeguard the health of your family. You can also shield your smart meter by putting a Faraday cage around it. These can be purchased at LessEMF.com.

The WiFi modem, airport, or router in your home gives off a large amount of radiation. There are meters you can purchase, some very expensive and some inexpensive to measure just how much radiation you are being exposed to from your routers and modems. Distance from the modem matters when it comes to radiation, so increasing your distance from the devices can help. For electro-sensitive people maintaining a safe distance from the modem can be crucial for health. Here is a link to a device for measuring electromagnetic fields with a built-in Gauss meter, that is medium priced for the US: Cornet ED78S Meter.

Minimise The Risk Of The Modem/Airport

Increase the distance of the modem from the people and animals in your home. Try to put it as far from people as possible.

Connect your modem, or airport, to a power strip and turn the power strip off at night when you are sleeping. This can make a big difference in improving the sleep of the members of your household.

People who live in congested areas have multiple WiFi signals coming into their homes. We, for example, have about twelve signals that we receive. I asked a Comcast employee, a month ago, if there was just one signal that everyone tapped in to, or if they sent separate signals to each home. I was told that they send separate signals to each home, and the reason for this is that is how the communications companies make their money.

It is possible to turn WiFi off when not in use, or to disable WiFi altogether, and use a wired ethernet system to connect the signal coming into your house to your modem, and from the modem connect to your computers through the ethernet wire.. The modem would have to be disabled, so it is not producing a signal. You also have to turn off WiFi on your computer. We recently had ethernet wire run under the house through the crawl space to each room in the house, so that we could connect to the Internet with a wired system. If you have a router connected to your modem, you can disable the WiFi on your modem, but not on your router; but, you can keep the router unplugged. Then if you need WiFi, you can plug it in. Alternatively, you can purchase a Netgear modem with an on-off switch for WiFi. There are other ways to protect your home from incoming WiFi. The distance where you live to the cell phone antennae is also a factor that can affect your health. You can go to  Antennasearch.com and put in your address to find out if you live a safe distance from the nearest cell phone antenna. It should be 1,644 feet away from any people. Cell phone antennas are often hidden in church steeples and other tall buildings. We invited an EMF consultant to analyse our house and she reported that we have extremely high exposure to radiofrequencies from cell towers that surround us on all sides. The downstairs bedrooms were not affected, but the master bedroom upstairs had a reading of 1,690 in uW/m2, or microwatts per square meter, which she classified as an extreme level of concern. Liz Menkes, BBEC, EMRS from EMF Healthy recommended that we purchase a canopy for our bed [not the kind that has a hoop] which shields from radiofrequencies from cell towers.  The one she preferred was made from Swiss Shield Naturell.

I have a teenager in my home, so I understand what a sacred cow the cell phone is to young people, and to older people as well.

Cancer Risk

First of all, are there health risks associated with cell phone use? Apparently, there definitely are. The amount of time, you spend on the cell phone adds to the risk. Negative effects are cumulative. Cell phones do pose a cancer risk to their users after long-term use. People who hold cell phones against their ears do have an increased risk of brain cancer, or gliomas. This type of cancer is on the rise. People who carry their cell phones in their pant pockets do have a higher risk of testicular cancer and low sperm count.

I attended a conference on “Wireless Technology and Public Health,” Dr Martin Pall, a Professor Emeritus of Biochemistry and Basic Medical Sciences in the School of Molecular Biosciences at Washington State University — “Recently published ground-breaking science on the mechanism of action of wireless microwave radiation on cells via Voltage Gated Calcium Channel Activation.” His research explains how EMF radiation disrupts regulation of cellular processes leading to inflammation and a variety of inflammatory disease states.” This paper was listed as one of the top medical publications of 2013 and has led to a profound shift in understanding of non-thermal EMF effects. Link to Dr Pall’s research

Minimise Risk Associated With Cell Phone Use

  • Purchase cell phones that emit lower amounts of radiation. Here is a quote from Dr Joel M Moskowitz, PhD, on the risks of cell phone use
  • “Based upon the weight of the evidence from several decades of research including thousands of peer-reviewed published studies, many experts worldwide have signed declarations calling upon governments to adopt stronger radiation standards to protect consumers from low intensity, non-thermal exposures from radiation associated with wireless communications, and to alert consumers about how to reduce their risk of harm
  • There is a company called com. They have a 24-hour cell phone radiation hot line. You can ask them about cell phone models and the amount of radiation they emit
  • Don’t hold the cell phone close to your body. Holding the cell phone one foot away from you reduces the radiation 10,000-fold. I have seen people carry their cell phones on their chest pocket against their hearts. This is not a good practice. Carrying the phone in the front, or back, pant pockets is also not wise. Some pants have cell phone pockets on the lower thigh, or lower leg. This is a wiser way to carry the cell phone. Here is a link to a model of men’s pants with lower pockets: Men’s Cargo Pants
  • Use the cell phone on speaker mode rather than holding it against your head.
  • Purchase cell phone shields for your cell phone. I prefer the one that covers both the front and back of the phone. You can get these at com
  • You can also purchase Air Tube Headsets from com,or from Electrahealth.com that reduce radiation to the head from cell phones.
  • Turn off the features on your cell phone that you are not using: turn off the blue tooth, turn off the GPS, use the phone on Airplane mode if you are not making, or expecting a call. Turn off cellular data and WiFi when you are not using them. If you are not going to turn these features off, at the minimum purchase a protective case.
  • Do not use the cell phone in the car. The car is an enclosed metal container that increases the exposure to radiation. Do not download movies and watch them in the car on your cell phone, or iPad, because the phone will be continuously sending signals out searching for the nearest cell phone antenna, thus greatly increasing your exposure
  • Use wired landline phones at home, and keep cell phones for when traveling, or when you are out of the house. I have purchased landline phones for every room in the house and I love them. AT&T charges US$50 to activate the phone jacks in your house. It is money well spent. Here is a link to an excellent phone I recently purchased from Amazon: Land Line Phone
  • Don’t use wireless phones at home, because you are getting the same radiation as you do from cell phones
  • Do not charge your cell phone by your bed. Charge the cell phone in a room far from where you are sleeping, and power off the cell phone when you are charging it
  • Use text messaging rather than talking. You get less radiation that way.
