Dr Vishal SHARMA responds to ThinkWellness360 questionnaire.
Why and how did you think of becoming a doctor?
I had a great fascination for the medical profession, from my childhood. This was why I always thought of becoming a doctor, and nothing else — because I loved the noble idea of serving people.
What made you think of, study and specialise in the system of medicine you now practice?
I was inspired to pursue Ayurveda by my family doctor — a BAMS graduate.
What has been your personal and professional experience as a doctor?
It’s a fact that I’ve to be always there, all the time, 24×7, for my patients. A sense of fulfilment, not just satisfaction, comes best when a patient says that they overpowered a disease, or illness, just by my healing touch. I would also like to say that no other profession endows us to do what we do on a daily basis — turning despondent tears into big, cheerful smiles.
What unique and special skills you think you have that has made the big difference for your patients?
That honed, genuine and cultivated component to caring and also dedication to work — to helping patients, whatever the odds.
What is your best definition of optimal wellness and why?
Optimal wellness emerges when a person is harmoniously balanced in their mind, body and spirit — as one whole, and not just being healthy in only a few areas, or bodily systems.
Your ‘best’ case?
Well, there are more than a handful of them — I can’t think of highlighting just one ‘best’ case in isolation.
Your ‘not-so-good’ case?
A chronic kidney disease patient. Despite my best efforts, I could not ‘fix’ more than 10 per cent of his kidney function.
What appeals to you the most?
Kindness, empathy and appreciation — without bias.
What annoys you the most?
When a patient says that doctors work primarily for money.

Charaka Samhita
Your favourite joke?
There are just too many of them to think of.
